“When people come into the store and they see this product, you don’t have to really sell it at all. They enjoy seeing the product!” — Brenda Sweeting
Retail Pricing Tips
As far as greeting cards go, it is very rare for me to even hint at looking at a card company. However, African American Expressions greeting cards are gorgeous and can easily be described as a work of art. I have never seen such vibrant, colorful cards.
The profit margin after factoring in the freight cost of 8 percent is 46 percent, still a respectable return on investment. The one exception is the checkbook planner display, which has a profit margin greater than 50 percent. The All Occasion cards, calendars, and checkbook planners all have the manufacturer’s MSRP printed on the back. The boxed holiday cards do not, so you can set an appropriate retail for your store. Quick tip: do not discount calendars in January; wait until the end of February. Some people will buy the calendars just for the art.
Buying Tip: Here is a good opportunity to repurpose some card racks provided by another company, or fill in an empty section of an existing card rack. You have the option of choosing your own mix of cards. After speaking with the company’s CEO, I recommend ordering the prepacked assortment the company offers; the CEO said the mix is a combination of proven favorites and new styles. Order the boxed cards no later than the end of the first week of November. I would not choose any of the freight offers other than ground shipping (8 percent).
Repurpose empty card racks when possible – calendars look awesome in a card rack. This is not a “sell out and forget” line; either start an excel sheet listing the cards that sold, or create back tags. Eventually, you will want to order a completely new mix or add another display.
